Neil Slater

Neil Slater retired at the end of the 2007-8 academic year.

Neil Slater is a Professor in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He is the Chairman of the Jazz Studies Division and the Director of Lab Bands. Mr. Slater directs The One O'Clock Lab Band, which has performed and recorded all over the world.

He teaches Conducting College Jazz Ensembles, coordinates the Jazz Lecture Series, and teaches advanced arranging students. He is the advisor for all graduate jazz recitals.

About Neil Slater
Award-winning composer and arranger Neil Slater is chair of the division of jazz studies at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, Texas. Mr. Slater is also the director of the internationally acclaimed UNT One O'Clock Lab Band. A 1995 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant recipient, Slater was selected as a Grammy Award nominee by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 1993. In addition to creating more than 60 compositions for jazz ensembles, Slater has written for symphony, mixed chamber groups, a cappella chorus and theater.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers has bestowed its "Standard Award" upon Slater each year since 1987. A noted jazz educator, Slater has shared his expertise in clinics with students in Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Mexico and at universities from Rhode Island to California. A former clinician and substitute pianist for the late jazz immortal Stan Kenton, Slater was a member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra-In-Residence program. He has conducted All-State jazz ensembles in more than a dozen states.

At UNT, Slater was principal advocate in the establishment of a master of music degree in jazz studies. More than 400 students are enrolled in the UNT jazz program, which, in 1947, was first in the United States to offer a bachelor's degree in jazz. Prior to his association at UNT, Slater founded the jazz studies program and established master's and bachelor's degree programs in jazz at the University of Bridgeport, Conn. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Slater received his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Mansfield University, his Master of Music in Composition from Duquesne University and pursued additional study at Columbia University.

Tony Baker is Associate Professor of trombone, and teaches applied trombone lessons.

About Tony Baker


Considered one of the finest trombonists of his generation, Tony Baker is currently a faculty member at the University of North Texas College of Music. Previously, Mr. Baker served as assistant professor of trombone at Ohio University and as visiting assistant professor of trombone and euphonium at Kent State University. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, he is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota and the University of Central Arkansas.

Mr. Baker's professional experience is as varied as it is substantial. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with ensembles such as the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, and the Columbus, Akron, Arkansas, and Duluth-Superior symphonies. Currently a member of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra (TX), he is also a member of the Intergalactic Contemporary Ensemble (formerly the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble); a Minneapolis/St. Paul-based group committed to the performance of modern works. Mr. Baker can be heard on the ensemble's latest release, I Dig, which features works by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Les Baxter, and Henry Mancini.

As a soloist, Mr. Baker has established an international reputation. Mr. Baker was a soloist at the 2000 Grindavik Cultural Festival in Iceland, an event held in conjunction with the Reykjavik Cultural Festival. He was also a soloist at the 2000 Festival International D'Art Lyrique, held in Aix-en-Provence, France. This is an annual music festival hosted by the Academie EuropeÎnne de Musique in conjunction with the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Ensembles with which Mr. Baker has performed as a soloist with ensembles such as the Ohio Valley Symphony, the University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, the Ohio University Wind Ensemble, the University of Central Arkansas Wind Ensemble, the University of North Texas Trombone Choir, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Wind Symphony, and the Ouachita Baptist University Wind Ensemble. Mr. Baker has given guest recitals and/or master classes at schools such as the University of North Texas, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the University of Kentucky, the University of Central Arkansas, Murray State University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Ohio State University, Ohio University, and Ouachita Baptist University. In February 1996, Professor Baker was invited to perform Luciano Berio's Sequenza V at the 1996 Music of Luciano Berio Symposium at the University of North Texas. He was also one of eight invited participants at the 1994 Christian Lindberg Solo Workshop. He has appeared as a clinician and performer at the 1998 University of Illinois Trombone Camp, the 1998 International Tuba/Euphonium Conference and most recently at the 2003 regional International Tuba/Euphonium Conference. In 2001 Baker was a guest artist at the International Trombone Festival in Nashville, Tennessee and will be a guest clinician at the 2003 International Trombone Festival in Helsinki, Finland. In May 2002, Mr. Baker hosted the 2002 International Trombone Festival at the University of North Texas. This festival has been widely recognized as the largest and most successful in the history of this event.

Mr. Baker's chamber music experience includes past memberships of professional ensembles such as the Kent Brass Quintet and OhioBrass, of which he was a founding member. Mr. Baker currently is a member of the University of North Texas Faculty Brass Quintet and the Appalachian Trombone Quartet. Mr. Baker performed with this ensemble on two tours of the midwestern United States and on a 2001 tour of the United Kingdom.

As a jazz musician Mr. Baker has performed with groups such as the Woody Herman Band and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. He has also performed on stage with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Steve Turre, Terry Gibbs, John Fedchock, Chris Vadala, and Jiggs Whigham. As a jazz clinician, Mr. Baker is on the faculty of summer jazz workshops at the University of North Texas and Northwest College in Cody, Wyoming. Past jazz workshops at which Baker was a clinician include the 2000, 2001 and 2002 University of North Texas Jazz Combo Clinics, the 2001 and 2002 University of North Texas Jazz Trumpet and Trombone Workshops, the 2001 and 2002 Yellowstone Jazz Camps, the 2002 Redbud Jazz Festival, and the 1999 Capital University Jazz Week. Mr. Baker has recently accepted an invitation to serve as the All-State Conductor of the 2004-2005 Minnesota All-State Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Baker has recorded with the Sounds of Blackness and can be heard with this group on their Grammy-nominated compact disc, Time for Healing. From October 1997 to April 2000 Baker was lead trombonist of the Columbus-based professional big band Jazz-to-Go. The recipient of many prizes and awards, Mr. Baker's honors include a First Place in Brass Performance in the 1991 Music Teachers National Association Wurlitzer Collegiate Artist National Competition.

Rodney Booth

Rodney Booth has been an active professional musician for over 30 years. A native of El Paso, Texas, he began his professional career at age sixteen as a trumpet player in his father’s bands. He received his degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas and was a student of Don "Jake" Jacoby. Rodney was a member of the renowned One O'Clock Lab Band.

He traveled across North and South America and Europe with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd Big Band. He has performed with many major recording artists such as Lou Rawls, Nancy Wilson, Wayne Newton, Michael Feinstein, Dionne Warwick, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Hamlisch, Ray Charles and Natalie Cole to name a few. He has recorded professionally with the popular artist Al Green and country star Janie Fricke.

Rodney is very active in studio and commercial recordings. He can be heard on national commercials for the Fina Corporation, Texaco, McDonald's Corporation, Domino's, Miller Brewing Company and Chevrolet. In addition, he performed on the commercial recordings for the Texas Rangers, the Boston Red Sox, CNN News, the US Postal Service and also the popular television series, "Wishbone". He also recently recorded the music for a national documentary, "The United States and Mexican War." His various bands have been chosen to perform for companies such as Exxon, the Zales Corporation, Gordon’s Jewelers, Merle Norman Company and Cartier's Jewelers. The Rodney Booth Big Band and his seven piece dance band are in demand for weddings, private and corporate events and award shows throughout the area. Rodney is also an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas where he teaches Improvisation, ear training, and jazz trumpet lessons.

Rodney's CD, "Look Over There" features his own jazz quartet; this CD received a very favorable review by music critic Thor Christensen in the Dallas Morning News and can be ordered through Cdbaby, Amazon, or Boothmusic.com. His second CD, "Ten and One", will feature Swing and Big Band Music and will be released September 11, 2009. An exciting duo CD with piano great Bill Lohr will be completed in December 2009.

Jennifer Barnes is a highly sought-after vocalist, educator, clinician and arranger throughout the U.S. and Canada, having relocated in 2011 from Los Angeles to accept a position as the Director of Vocal Jazz Studies here at the University of North Texas.  She is an active vocalist in both studio and live performance settings, having appeared and sung on radio and television advertisements including Chili’s Restaurant, Epson, Old El Paso, and McDonalds, and on films including “Wall-E”, “Live Free Or Die Hard”, “Ice Age 2 & 3”, “Enchanted”, “Star Trek” and the FOX t.v. hit "Glee".  Ms. Barnes has recorded her own solo jazz CD, “You Taught My Heart” (available on iTunes and CDBaby.com).   She is the alto vocalist a vocal arranger in the vocal quartet Vertical Voices Live (www.VerticalVoicesLive.com) alongside Kerry Marsh, Julia Dollison and Greg Jasperse, and they maintain an active performance and tour schedule in the U.S. and Canada.
 
As an educator, Ms. Barnes has directed downBeat [magazine] award-winning Vocal Jazz Ensembles and taught privately at seven universities, has served as a guest conductor for District and All-State Music Festivals in twelve states, has taught jazz vocals at the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camps since 1998, and her numerous vocal arrangements are published by both Sound Music Publications (www.smpjazz.com) and UNC Jazz Press (www.uncjazzpress.com).

About Richard DeRosa

Mr. DeRosa received a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition for "Neil" in 2015. Recorded by the One O'Clock Lab Band on Lab 2015, "Neil" was written for his friend and mentor, Neil Slater, who directed the ensemble from 1981-2008 and served as UNT's jazz department chair during that period.

Since 2012 Mr. DeRosa has composed and arranged music for the prestigious WDR (West Deutsche Rundfunk) Jazz Band in Cologne, Germany and served as the band's chief conductor from 2014 -2016. His various projects with the band have included conducting and arranging for legendary bassist Ron Carter for his CD My Personal Songbook. Other artists for whom DeRosa has arranged and conducted include Kurt Elling, Patti Austin, Joshua Redman, Stefon Harris, Marvin Stamm & Bill Mays, Richie Beirach and Gregor Huebner, Garry Dial and Dick Oatts, and Warren Vaché.

Since 2001 Mr. DeRosa has arranged and conducted music for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra to feature Toots Thielemans, Annie Ross, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, and other notable artists in addition to eight arrangements for the LCJO production of Stephen Sondheim's music in "A Bed and A Chair" that featured Bernadette Peters.

Other commissioned arrangements have been recorded by the Mel Lewis, Gerry Mulligan, and Glenn Miller big bands, vocalist Susannah McCorkle, rising trumpet star Dominick Farinacci on his CD Lovers, Tales, and Dances, and acclaimed solo violinist Anne Akiko Meyers on her CD Dreams...Seasons. Mr. DeRosa has also served as co-arranger, orchestrator, and conductor for the critically acclaimed recording projects, Dial & Oatts: Brassworks and When Winter Comes featuring guitarist Fred Fried. Dial & Oatts' most recent CD "That Music Always Round Me" features poems by Walt Whitman set to original music by the two leaders. DeRosa served as the choral arranger and studio conductor.

Mr. DeRosa's arrangements for orchestra have been performed in concert by The Metropole Orchestra (Holland), Swedish Radio and Television Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Pops Orchestra, the Portland Symphony Orchestra (Maine), and The One O’Clock Lab Band with The Houston Symphony.

Mr. DeRosa’s compositions for television, film, and theater include background music cues for Another World, As the World Turns, The Guiding Light, commercials for Telex, Bristol-Meyers, and Kodak, various documentaries broadcast on PBS, orchestrations for independent films Gray Matters, East Broadway, and Standard Time, and original music scores for the national touring theater company ArtsPower as well as orchestrations for Frankenstein, the Musical.

Earlier in his career, DeRosa toured and recorded with Gerry Mulligan and Bob Brookmeyer, Susannah McCorkle, Jackie Cain & Roy Kral, Chuck Wayne, and Marlene Ver Planck. Other employed performances with notable musicians include Marian McPartland, Gene Bertoncini, Peter Nero, Warren Vaché, Chris Connor, and Larry Elgart.

Mr. DeRosa is a full professor at the University of North Texas where he is the director of jazz composition/arranging studies. His former teaching posts were at William Paterson University, Manhattan School of Music, and The Juilliard School where he taught advanced jazz arranging for studio orchestra. He is the author of Concepts for Improvisation: A Comprehensive Guide for Performing and Teaching (Hal Leonard Publications) and Acoustic and MIDI Orchestration for the Contemporary Composer (Focal Press) and remains active as a clinician and an adjudicator for music festivals and workshops.. Mr. DeRosa’s service to teaching was recognized in the 3rd edition (1994) of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Rosana Eckert

Rosana Eckert is Senior Lecturer in the Jazz Studies Division. Her teaching responsibilities include Vocal Jazz Techniques, Songwriting, Vocal Jazz Pedagogy, and Vocal Jazz Applied.

About Rosana Eckert
Rosana Eckert is an internationally recognized live and studio vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and jazz educator. As a vocal artist, she has recorded four solo CDs and performs regularly throughout the U.S. and abroad. She has had the pleasure of performing and/or recording with such jazz greats as Lyle Mays, Kenny Wheeler, George Duke, Jon Faddis, Marvin Stamm, and Bobby McFerrin, and she toured Europe and Scandinavia as a sub in the Grammy Award-winning vocal quartet New York Voices. Her debut CD, At the End of the Day, was praised as “an occasion for celebration” by AllAboutJazz.com and “a superior debut” by Cadence Magazine. The CD was a finalist for Best New Jazz Album in the 2006 Independent Music Awards. Her newest CD, Small Hotel, once again showcases her original songs and unique arranging style, and it features guest appearances by trumpeter Marvin Stamm and bassist Christian McBride.

A renowned educator, Rosana serves as Senior Lecturer of vocal jazz at the University of North Texas. Rosana received two degrees from UNT, studying music theory, French Horn, and later, vocal jazz. In the Fall of 1999, she became the first female to join the esteemed jazz faculty. Since then, she has been the primary private jazz voice teacher at UNT as well as faculty and co-host of the UNT Vocal Jazz Summer Workshop. She also serves on the faculty of the New York Voices Summer Vocal Jazz Camp in Bowling Green, Ohio. Rosana is in demand as a clinician, festival adjudicator, and choral arranger, and she has been the guest conductor for many All-State jazz choirs, including California, Colorado, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, and Iowa. Her vocal ensemble arrangements are published by Sound Music Publications, Hal Leonard, and Rosana Eckert Music and have been performed worldwide. Most recently, she co-wrote a jazz musical for young voices with popular children’s author and educator Sharon Burch titled Freddie the Frog and the Jungle Jazz (published by Hal Leonard).

In addition to her extensive live performing and teaching, Rosana also works regularly as a studio vocalist and voice-over talent in Dallas, having sung or spoken on hundreds of commercials, album projects, publishing demos, and radio IDs around the world.

Fred Hamilton

Fred Hamilton is a Professor in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He teaches applied Jazz Guitar lessons, Rhythm Section Master Class, Jazz Improvisation, and is the director of the Guitar Ensemble Labs, which include five guitarists, bass and drums.

About Fred Hamilton


Fred Hamilton is a guitarist and bassist, and a Professor of Music in the Jazz Studies Division of the University of North Texas. He teaches guitar, jazz improvisation, rhythm section masterclass and directs the guitar ensembles. He is also on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops and the UNT Combo Camp. Since coming to Texas, he has performed with such artists as Bill Frisell, Dave Liebman, Cedar Walton, George Garzone, Mike Stern, Kenny Wheeler, The Brecker Brothers, Paul Wertico, James Moody, Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer and John Abercrombie.

His most recent CD is "Afternoon of the Soul," released in October, 2009 on his own Wolf Tales label. He recorded "A Conversation" on the Blue Bamboo Music label with Woody Witt and Ed Soph. Prior to that, "Live at Cezanne" as a bassist with saxophonist Woody Witt and trumpeter Tim Hagans on the Apria label (apriarecords.com) released in fall 2007. In 2005, the DVD The Jam featuring the Earl Harvin Trio was released by Hamilton on the Mel Bay label (melbay.com) and is also available as a book/DVD titled Intuitive Improvisation. He is featured on guitar on the Alfred Publications DVD Rhythm Section Workshop for Jazz Directors, released in 2005.

In 1989, shortly before joining the UNT faculty, while living in Denver, he was featured on two interesting albums. The first for the Rabbit Ears subsidiary of Windham Hill, with pianist Art Lande, Paul McCandless who was one of the founding members of the band Oregon and narration by actress Holly Hunter. Titled The Three Pigs and the Billy Goat's Gruff, it was part of a children's series featuring original music and celebrity readings. The second was The Odd Couple with tenor saxophonist Spike Robinson and pianist Rob Mullins for the Capri label.

He has written articles for Guitar Player magazine and has big band, combo and guitar ensemble music published with the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press. He has two published works with Mel Bay Publications, Inc. Melodic Studies and Compositions for Guitar: A Reading Workout for Serious Musicians was released in November, 1993, and his solo "Thanks, Byrl Elvin" from the album Looking Back on Tomorrow is included in Mel Bay's Anthology of Jazz Guitar Solos Volume Three. A series of compositions written for the UNT L-5 Electric Guitar Ensemble is available from Mel Bay. These have been recorded and released on The Quilt Master, a CD for the UNT jazz label, available on the (recordings page).

Denton, Texas and UNT have been home since 1989, and prior to that, he held positions on the faculty at Concordia College in Montreal (1984-85), St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia (1982-84), and Bowling Green State University in Ohio (1979-82). His M.M. in composition is from the University of Northern Colorado where he was a graduate teaching fellow from 1978 to 1979. Prior to that he played guitar and arranged for the Commanders Jazz Ensemble in the U.S. Air Force with the NORAD Command Band (1972-76).

During his formative years in Denver, Colorado, he studied for six years with Jim Atkins, original rhythm guitarist with the Les Paul Trio. The other influential guitarist in the Denver area during his youth was the legendary Johnny Smith.

He has recorded several jazz albums on guitar and bass (see below). Check out Fred's personal web site. “His solos are sparkling and Cannonball Adderley influenced" (Evening Standard, London). “Saxophonist Brad Leali was among the most soulful and exciting I’ve heard recently” (New York Times).  With a unique style and sound, which echoes the influences of his past, Brad Leali is one of the most notable saxophonists of current times. A native of Denver, Colorado, Brad was raised in the Baptist Church. In addition to gospel music, he spent countless hours listening to the music his parents played (Coltrane, Cannonball, Bird, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, and Nancy Wilson). It’s no wonder that at a very young age, he was able to combine gospel, jazz, and R&B into his playing.

As a child, Brad recalls spending time looking through old yearbook photos of his father in the high school jazz band, looking sharp and clean. He was so enamored by these images that he found himself opening the case, time and time again, to see the beautiful horn from the photos. He finally told his father that he just had to play. That very day, his father had the horn repaired and signed Brad up for the Denver Junior Police Concert Band. That began his long love affair with the saxophone. While studying the saxophone, Brad spent his youthful years listening to live jazz at many Denver music venues. One in particular was named El Chapultapec, owned by Jerry Krantz. Krantz loved jazz and would allow young musicians, such as Brad, to listen, learn, and sit in. It was here that Brad first heard many of his early mentors and local legends (Billy Tolles, Billy Wallace, Homer Brown, Nat Yarborough, etc.). He also got to hear and study with other jazz greats, such as trumpeter Clark Terry and saxophonist Eddie “Cleanhead” Vincent.

Leali received a bachelor of arts degree in music education from the University of North Texas in 1989, where he played with the world-renowned One O’Clock Lab Band. Upon graduating, the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra immediately recruited him. In his tenure with the orchestra (1989-1994), Brad was the lead alto saxophonist and the musical director. During this time, they toured the world and the orchestra recorded two highly acclaimed CDs (Blue Light, Red Light [1991], When My Heart Finds Christmas [1993]).

By invitation of Frank Foster, Brad then joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1995 (later under Grover Mitchell, 2003). During his years with the group, the Basie band was a two-time Grammy award-winning orchestra. It was one of the greatest musical learning experiences he’d ever had. Working with older musicians only deepened his appreciation of the importance of this music. Spending time one-on-one with the likes of Joe Williams was unforgettable in these formative years.

During his time as one of the top jazz musicians in New York City, Leali was a staple in legendary jazz venues like the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Jazz Standard, Iridium, and Birdland. He also has performed in Lincoln Center in the orchestras of jazz legends Nancy Wilson and Benny Golson.

Brad’s desire to pay it forward and help keep jazz alive led him to earn a master’s degree from Rutgers University in 2005. He was quickly appointed as Director of Jazz Studies at Texas Tech University. While there, several scholarships were established in his name, including the “Brad Leali Endowed Jazz Scholarship.” In 2008, Brad joined the esteemed University of North Texas (UNT) faculty as Professor of Jazz Saxophone, where he directs small group ensembles and teaches jazz performance fundamentals and jazz saxophone. As the recipient of the UNT Creative Impact Award in 2014, Brad was recognized as a distinguished faculty member for his outstanding contributions as an educator who perpetuates the value of creative development and performance.

Brad Leali has also had a prolific recording career. His first solo recording was Priority Soul! in 1998 on the New Jazz Renaisssance Recordings label. In 1999, the Count Basie Orchestra won a Grammy award for Count Plays Duke with Leali receiving his own nomination for his solo work on the classic Billy Strayhorn composition, "The Star-Crossed Lovers." His discography also includes Live in Europe (Brad Leali Quartet, 2004); Brooklyn Soul Organization (also produced by Leali, 2004); the critically acclaimed Maria Juanez (2006), which features his own compositions and an eighteen-member jazz orchestra; and DA’s Time (Brad Leali-Claus Raible Quartet, 2008) on the TCB label. Leali’s numerous television appearances include local news programs, “NBC’s TODAY,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” BET, and the “Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas Special.” He performed annually for many years as part of the Kennedy Center Honors program. Leali also performed at President Obama’s inaugural celebration “We Are One.”

While Brad continues teaching at UNT, he frequently performs, tours, and records. He also enjoys working as a guest artist, clinician, and adjudicator at other educational institutions. Brad has had a long-time endorsement with Keilwerth Saxophones and D’Addario Reeds. He currently tours with Lyle Lovett & His Large Band (2013-present).

John Murphy, an ethnomusicologist and saxophonist, joined the UNT Jazz Studies faculty in 2001. He has served as chair of the Division of Jazz Studies since Fall 2008. He is the author of Music in Brazil (Oxford University Press, 2006) and Cavalo-marinho pernambucano (Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil University Press, 2008) and has published articles on jazz improvisation, Brazilian traditional and popular music, Cuban music in New York, and college teaching. He published the article "Beyond the Improvisation Class: Learning to Improvise in a University Jazz Studies Program," in Musical Improvisation: Art, Education, and Society (2009), edited by Bruno Nettl and Gabriel Solis. He has held Fulbright (1990-91) and National Endowment for the Humanities (2000-2001) fellowships for research in Brazil.

While a student at the University of North Texas, Murphy earned two degrees (B.M., jazz studies performance, 1984; M.M., music theory, 1986), played in the One O'Clock Lab Band (1984-85), and free-lanced in Dallas-Ft. Worth. He then earned two degrees at Columbia University (M.A. & Ph.D., ethnomusicology) and played Latin music in the New York area. He plays frequently in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area: jazz on tenor saxophone and Irish traditional music on button accordion.

Murphy teaches jazz history (undergraduate and graduate), jazz styles & analysis (graduate), and jazz research methods (graduate); and collaborates with the ethnomusicology area by serving on thesis committees. During the 2012-2013 academic year he served as Interim Director of Graduate Studies. He teaches a listening class at the UNT Small Group Jazz summer workshop. He served as chair of the Division of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology from 2006 to 2008; served the Society for Ethnomusicology as web editor from 1997 to 2002; and taught previously at Western Illinois University (1992-2001).

James Riggs retired at the end of the 2007-08 academic year.

James Riggs is a Professor in the Jazz Studies and Performance Divisions of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He teaches applied saxophone lessons. He directs The Two O'Clock Lab Band, which has won many honors nationally. He performs frequently with both the Dallas and Fort Worth symphony orchestras. Mr. Riggs has presented many clinics and workshops both nationally and internationally.

About James Riggs
Saxophonist James Riggs serves as Regents Professor at the University of North Texas where he teaches in the Divisions of Instrumental Studies and Jazz Studies. Riggs teaches jazz and classical saxophone, the Jazz Saxophone Fundamentals Master Class, directs the award winning Two O' Clock Lab Band and coordinates Jazz Saxophone Departmental Recitals. He has produced many award-winning saxophonists including first place winners and finalists in the North American Saxophone Alliance Young Artist Competition, finalists in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Saxophone Competition and winners in Down Beat magazines Student Music Solo Awards. Riggs' former students hold teaching and performing positions in numerous colleges and universities throughout the United States and in major military bands in Washington, D.C. His students hold first call professional playing positions across the globe including Hamburg Germany, New York City and Los Angeles.

For four years Down Beat Magazine selected the UNT Two O' Clock Jazz Band as ("Winner") of the Annual Student Music Awards. The Two O'Clock Lab Band discography numbers seven recordings: The Transparent Two, the Two O'Clock Jazz Band, A Salute to Benny Carter, The Manne We Love: Gershwin Revisited, a recent release of John Williams' arrangements, the Translucent Two, The Two O'Clock Jazz Band "Live" and The Best of the Big "O".

Riggs has performed regularly with the Dallas and Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestras and performed with the Dallas Symphony on the European tour of Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, England and Ireland. He recorded Prokoviev's Lt. Kije, Gershwin's Rhapsodie in Blue, Porgy and Bess and American In Paris with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Riggs appeared as a jazz soloist with the United States Navy Commodores in Washington, D.C., was a featured soloist with the North Texas Wind Symphony conducted by Eugene Corporon at Texas Music Educators Association and is featured with the UNT Wind Symphony on the "Luminaries" CD by Klavier. Riggs is the leader/founder of the Official Texas Jazz Orchestra a large jazz ensemble made up of outstanding musicians in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex.

Riggs has conducted All-State Jazz Bands in Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Tennessee. Riggs has appeared as a featured performer and clinician at Jazz Festivals throughout the USA and Sweden. As a freelance artist he has performed with the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, and others. He holds degrees from the University of North Texas and the University of Toledo. Riggs is an artist/clinician for Rico International.

Paris Rutherford


Paris Rutherford, Regents Professor Emeritus in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas (UNT), was coordinator of vocal jazz studies and director of UNT Jazz Singers I, award-winning vocal jazz ensemble heard on sixteen albums. In addition to his work with the Jazz Singers, he taught courses in instrumental and vocal jazz arranging, jazz composition, and vocal jazz styles.

About Paris Rutherford
A sought-after clinician in vocal jazz, Rutherford has over one hundred vocal jazz arrangements in publication by Hal Leonard Music, Sound Music Publishing, UNC Jazz Press, and through Artist Share by Maria Schneider. He was a founding board member in the Jazz Education Network. Rutherford is a member of ASCAP.

In June 2008, Hal Leonard Publications published Rutherford’s book The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, in which he details the entire list of issues involved in directing a jazz choir.

His instrumental compositions and arrangements have been played and recorded by the One O'Clock Band, the Dallas Jazz Orchestra, the Air Force Reserve Jazz Ensemble, the North Texas Clarinet Consort and Adkins String Ensemble, as well as by the Dallas, Richardson and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras. In earlier years, Rutherford composed and produced advertising music for the Stephen Arnold Group, TM Productions, PAMS, the William B Tanner Corporation, as well as for his own production company in London, England. He is a former trombonist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

A native of Dallas, Rutherford received Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Composition at Southern Methodist University, and formerly taught at the University of Colorado at Denver.

Jay Saunders retired in 2016 as an Instructor in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He taught applied trumpet lessons to Jazz Studies majors, directed the One and Two O'clock Lab Bands, taught Introduction to Jazz Recordings. He has toured with the US Army Studio Band, Stan Kenton, and others. He is an active working professional in the DFW metroplex.

About Jay Saunders
During his undergraduate years at North Texas from 1965 until graduating with a B.M. degree in 1968, Jay Saunders, lecturer, was a member of the One O'Clock Lab Band, an undergraduate teaching assistant in trumpet, and played two tours with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. After graduation, from 1968-1971, he played lead trumpet in the Studio Band of the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington D.C. Upon discharge from the Army, he immediately rejoined and toured with the Kenton band as lead trumpet until the fall of 1972. He returned to UNT as a graduate student serving as a graduate assistant in trumpet and lab bands until the summer of 1975, having earned his M.M.E. degree in fall 1974.

During the next five years he rejoined the Kenton band for short stints and taught at the Kenton clinics. He was a member of the Jerry Gray Orchestra in the Fairmont Hotel's Venetian Room, backing such performers as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughn, and hundreds of other noted artists. Since the 1980s he has been a performer/educator in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including playing first trumpet for the Dallas Summer Musicals; performing with the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras as part of their Pops Series; and for shows and recordings in the area. He has been heard as lead trumpet for broadcasts by CNN-Headline News, CNN, HBO, HBO Asia, The Golf Channel, ESPN radio, Warner Bros. and Paramount TV themes, for the BBC, VOA, WABC, KABC, WNBC, KNBC, WCBS and many other broadcasters in the United States. He has recorded eleven albums with Stan Kenton, one album each with Doc Severinsen and Ornette Coleman, and many rock, Latino and religious artists.

Lynn Seaton is Associate Professor in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. Mr. Seaton teaches Jazz Bass Lessons, Advanced Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Performance Fundamentals I for Bass, Jazz Performance Fundamentals II for Bass, and Rhythm Section Master Class.

Lynn is an active working professional musician in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He has recorded and toured with many jazz greats including Kenny Drew, Jr., John Fedchock, Tim Hagans, Cal Collins, Bobby Shew, George Shearing, Frank Wess and the big bands of Woody Herman and Count Basie.

About Lynn Seaton
Lynn was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, July 18, 1957. He began studying classical guitar at age seven, switching to string bass at age nine. While studying music at the University of Oklahoma, he began working the clubs around the state.

In September of 1980, Lynn relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio to join the Steve Schmidt Trio and the Blue Wisp Big Band. He was awarded a Jazz Studies Fellowship in the summer of 1981 from the National Endowment for the Arts to study with Rufus Reid.

Lynn has been a faculty member at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Long Island University, State University of New York at New Paltz, William Patterson College, and is currently teaching at the University of North Texas. He thoroughly enjoys teaching workshops, coaching ensembles, and doing artist-in residence programs, having done many throughout America and Europe including numerous schools, kindergarten through college, Jamey Aebersold's and UNT jazz camps, and Clark Terry's Institute of Jazz Studies. He currently has private students as well.

During September of 1984, Lynn joined Woody Herman and the Young Thundering Herd. July of 1985 brought him a position with the Count Basie Orchestra. During this time he moved to New York City (1986) where he resided until 1998. After his two-year engagement with the Basie Band, he did an extended tour with Tony Bennett and a six-month tour with George Shearing. Much of 1991 was spent touring with Monty Alexander. 1992 through 1994 was spent freelancing in the New York area. 1995 until the fall of 2000 was with the Jeff Hamilton Trio. He has performed at festivals world wide including the Bern, Concord, JVC, Kool, Kyoto, Chicago, Nice, Elkhart, Kansas City, Montreal, Edmonton, Newport, North Sea, Perugia, West Coast, San Sebastian, Ottercrest, Topeka, Sarasota, Paradise Valley and Poori. At present, Lynn is freelancing and touring as a performer and clinician with a variety of people.

He is currently living in Highland Village, Texas, working and recording with many great jazz artists, and leading his own trio. Mike Steinel is an Associate Professor in the Jazz Studies Division of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He teaches Jazz Improvisation, Pedagogy of Improvisation, and Jazz Trumpet Masterclass. He directs the UNT Jazz Combo Workshop and the UNT Jazz Trumpet Workshop. He has published numerous compositions for jazz ensembles. He is the author of Building A Jazz Vocabulary, Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble, and Essential Standards for Jazz Ensemble. About Mike Steinel
Mike Steinel holds a BME degree from Emporia State University and a MME degree from the University of North Texas. An experienced jazz trumpeter, pianist, composer and arranger, Mr. Steinel was jazz artist in residence at Bethel College and was on the faculty of Northern Illinois University before coming to North Texas. He has served on the faculties of the Clark Terry Jazz Camp, the Jamey Aebersold Improvisation Camps, the Saskatchewan Summer Jazz Camp and the University of Missouri Summer Jazz Residency.

Mike has performed as soloist at the MENC and IAJE national conventions and at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. His playing experience includes work with Clark Terry, Don Ellis, Bill Evans, Jerry Bergonzi and recordings with the Chicago Jazz Quintet and the Frank Mantooth Big Band. Honors received include an Illinois Arts Council Chairman's Grant (1985) and a jazz fellowship grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (1987).
