Music in Brazil

author (L) sitting in with Arlindo dos Oito Baixos

This is the companion site for my book, Music in Brazil: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture, in the Oxford University Press Global Music series. It's intended for students and teachers who are using the book as well as general readers and Brazilian music fans. That's me in the photo, at left, sitting in with Arlindo dos Oito Baixos (him: cool and relaxed; me: concentrating like crazy in order to avoid pushing when I should pull and vice versa), my teacher of accordion during 2000-2001.

This site is actively maintained. It was last updated on 2016-06-03.

My current Brazil-related project is preparing the English subtitles for a new documentary on cavalo-marinho Mestre Biu Alexandre. I'll post details about the film when it's complete.

Arlindo died on Oct. 23, 2013, after a long struggle with diabetes. Here are two videos I made that document an evening at the forró club he ran on Sundays at his house. Your browser may tell you that the video file won't play because it's corrupt. If you download the file, it plays with no problem. This was tested most recently on 2015-02-20.

Arlindo's obituary in the Diario de Pernambuco.

Here you will find text, audio, and video resources to supplement the book and my blog with news of current events in Brazilian music.

This site is not to be confused with the official Oxford University Press Global Music Series companion site. Don't have a copy yet? Try the Oxford University Press catalog or amazon.
