Music Business Faculty Named Finalist

The Music Business Association has named @UNT College of Music Assistant Professor of Music Business, Jessica Muñiz-Collado, as finalist for its Bizzy Award “Music Business Educator of the Year." MBA says, “The award celebrates a music business educator who inspires students to enter the music business. The winner will lead by example and teach across the breadth and depth of the industry to open students’ awareness to the possibilities available in the music industry today. The winning candidate should expose students to the importance of connection and relationships in this industry while continuing to learn and be a part of the industry themselves.”

Kim and Wagner Selected for Mentor Program

Students Serim Kim and Natalie Wagner have been selected for the Women In Jazz Organization Mentors program. Natalie will be studying with saxophonist, Erica Von Kleist while Serim will be working with pianist, Dawn Clement Music. The mentorship is “designed to connect and enrich the community of women and non-binary people in Jazz. The program provides strong role models to up-and-coming jazz musicians and composers in a safe and supportive environment and offers a way for established jazz musicians and composers on the scene to actively participate in and help shape the future of their art form.”

Another Alumnus Grammy Win

Trumpeter and University of North Texas alumnus, Frank Greene, was part of the The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra Recording of, “Basie Swings the Blues,” which won Best Large Jazz Ensemble at the 66th Recording Academy GRAMMY Awards.

Tixier Appears in Netflix Documentary Released

In Fall 2022, College of Music Assistant Professor of Jazz Violin, Scott Tixier, performed solo jazz violin at the Carnegie Hall world premiere of the Jon Batiste composition, “American Symphony.” Tixier appears in the Netflix-produced documentary and trailer chronicling the Batiste creation of the original symphony while his wife, Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatment.

Davy Mooney Releases New Album

Sunnyside Records releases new 10 track album, “Way Back.” (funded in part by a 2022 @UNT Scholarly and Creative Activity award from the College of Music). One track called "Wintry Mix," is inspired by the North Texas landscape and weather.

ASCAP Awards Alumnus

Through a national juried competition, Jack Lanhardt (BM ’23) has received a Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award. The American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) Foundation describes recipients as up-and-coming composers and are proud to be a part of their creative journey.

Dave Meder Releasing Third Album

Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano, Dave Meder, releases “New American Hymnal.” The recording features fellow UNT faculty member Philip Dizack on trumpet. Meder describes the project “think of it as a "book of worship" for our American "civic religion."

IAA Fellows Named

The University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts has selected Quincy Davis as a 2023-224 Advancement of the Arts Faculty Fellow. He will create a new musical composition for large ensemble titled “Empathy Suite,” inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of George Floyd.
