Text of the press release

UNT Jazz Repertory Ensemble Premieres Works by Hermeto Pascoal The UNT Jazz Repertory Ensemble and guest pianist Jovino Santos Neto will perform the U.S. premiere of works for big band by Hermeto Pascoal on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 8 p.m. in Stan Kenton Hall at the UNT College of Music.

Hermeto Pascoal, born in Brazil in 1936, is a prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist. Widely regarded as a genius, a wizard of sound-making, and one of the most musical individuals on the planet, he gained international prominence in 1970 when he recorded with Miles Davis. This program includes his strikingly original compositions for big band augmented with voice, accordion, and Brazilian percussion, and several works for small ensemble. The big band works been performed outside of Brazil by Pascoal's group only in England and Denmark.

Jovino Santos Neto played piano and flute in Pascoalıs group from 1977 to 1992. He moved to the U.S. in 1993 after performing on Sergio Mendesıs Grammy-winning album Brasileiro, and currently teaches at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle while maintaining a busy schedule of performing and recording. He edited the works to be performed on this program, and has edited an edition of Hermeto Pascoalıs music, "Tudo é som" (All is Sound), which is published by Universal Edition. His site: www.jovisan.net.

The UNT Jazz Repertory Ensemble, directed by John Murphy, performs classic jazz and the works of contemporary composers. Murphy is an ethnomusicologist who specializes in Brazilian music as well as jazz. "This program gives me a chance to share my interest in Brazilian music with jazz studies majors in the ensemble and the audience," he comments. "I hope it helps students feel the joyful spirit that Hermeto Pascoal brings to his music. And there's no better guide to its intricacies than Jovino Santos Neto."

Jovino Santos Neto is bringing a new documentary on Hermeto Pascoal in Portuguese with English subtitles.
